Now if The Sugarhill Gang wrote a song about being the first group to commercially release a rap record, or if Vanilla Ice busted a rhyme about being the man who opened the hip-hop gates to a slew a melanin-challenged rhymesmiths, or if Grandmaster Flash boasted that he brought consciousness to the art-form, you’d think it was kinda stupid. Somehow though, when Cube, Dre and Ren -- three-fifths of the original NWA -- brag that they started all “this gangsta shit,” it resonates deeply with anyone who’s ever listened to the seminal Straight Outta Compton. And for kids who tuned in after the “world’s most dangerous rap group” disbanded, the track serves as a little history lesson, set to one of Dre’s radio-friendly, neck-nodding beats. But hel-lo: Cube and Dre have treaded this “I’m-one-of-the-originals” terrain so many times before on their respective solo projects, that it’s getting a little stale. At age 30, you’d think they could come up with something to rap about together besides their old glory days.
