Reminiscent of the early battling hip-hop days, Jurassic 5 relies on pure MC skills and DJ beats for their music. Their song “Verbal Gunfight” also follows a traditional form of the early hip-hop ballad style with a lyrical narrative that spotlights the highly evolved rhymes of a veteran crew. The master DJs, Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark, hit the decks with crazy crafty beats and add a touch of the street freestyle flavor to the cut. “Verbal Gunfight” is battling at its best and it reminds this critic why he got me into hip-hop in the first place. Based solely on beats, rhythms and rhyming skills, their music is for hip-hop fans who remember the music before the heavy sampling and gangsta rapping took it in another direction. Jurassic 5 are not revivalists, but rather a hip-hop band that never sold out and stayed true to their sound. That freestyle sound … From that underground scene … The stuff that’s still the shiznit.
