How many 22-year-old tracks are still relevant enough to kick ass lyrically and inspire wild dance floor gyrations musically? |

Taken from one of the most legendary of Elvis Costello's early performances, this recording of Costello & the Attractions live at Toronto's El Mocambo Club reveals a performer bristling with equal amounts of anger and energy. "Radio, Radio" is a great choice to pull from the concert, as it still crackles with intensity and, most importantly, is as relevant today as it was back in 1978 when Costello included it on This Year's Model. With a sneer as convincing and considerably more menacing than the original Elvis, Costello spits out his diatribe against formulaic radio with a barely restrained fury. The Attractions play the living hell out of the song: it's all angular guitars, breathless Farfisa, thumping bass, and crashing drums. In 1978, "Radio, Radio" served up a much-deserved slap at the established radio community that turned up its collective nose at punk and new wave in favor of overproduced arena rock. This lean-and-mean live recording shows conclusively (and concussively) the musical snap and lyrical smarts of "Radio, Radio" ("I wanna bite the hand that feeds me, I wanna bite that hand so badly...") and firmly sets Elvis Costello in the "angry young punk" stance that earned him the respect and devotion that he continues to enjoy today.
