"Hey Lowdown," from Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys’ 2000 release, Night Tide, continues the combo's patented easy-going brand of swinging rockabilly, this time with a heavy nod to the great Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds band, Rockpile. From the chunka-chunka guitar to Sandy's restrained vocal, the track strikes you as a cross between Rockpile's pop and the manic swing of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. But no matter how it hits you, "Hey Lowdown" is a great song, a sad tale of car-fueled jealousy that lands Big Sandy in the bighouse, moaning the blues. With great weeping pedal steel and a tear-it up guitar solo from Ashley Kingman, this is primo Big Sandy -- and as fans the world over know, it don't get much better than that.
