When it’s not thumping out of a club’s cavernous speakers, most electronic music is glorified white sound -- you might get up and dance when it’s booming out of that big system, but at home, it’s easily ignored as you go about the business of the day. You might occasionally nod your head to the beat, but most of the time, it won’t distract you from whatever else you’re doing. Thankfully, this isn’t the case for the “Groove Protocol Mix” of “File Under Futurism,” a shining exception to that bland rule. It’s almost impossible to even think of anything else while this amazing track is playing. “Futurism” is extremely challenging and intelligent, and demands your undivided attention. There is something interesting going on during every second of this seven minute-plus mix. The contrast between frenetic breakbeats and hypnotic strings is absolutely captivating, as funky bass grooves and dynamic scratching crash headlong into an impenetrable wall of sound. It’s like the old “you got your peanut butter in my chocolate” dilemma, but rather than just coming up with “two great tastes that taste great together,” DJ Spooky and the Freight Elevator Quartet bring together a broad palate of flavors to cook up a mind-blowing musical stew. Far from being just another faceless dance track, this is music that you can’t ignore, and while “Futurism” may not be something you’ll want to listen to all the time, it’s well worth the effort to explore every nuance of this brilliant track.
