Continuing his tradition of music with a cinematic flair, Stan Ridgway’s MUSICBLITZ Exclusive, “Beloved Movie Star” is a haunting and beautiful track that not only evokes lyrical images of the silver screen, it feels like it belongs in a movie. With Ridgway’s trademark quirkiness, he paints a wistful picture of the life of a movie star, with brilliant lyrics like “Stuntmen make you feel secure / Wrap you up in soft allure / Your key light’s bright, your close-up’s now / This picture could tank, but you’ll make out somehow.” Ridgway’s movie star is not at all happy with her life, and is devastated when she doesn’t get a role she thinks she’s perfect for; as Ridgway laments, “You are the part / Why don’t they know?” The portrait Ridgway paints is extremely vivid, thanks to his crystal clear vocal delivery, replete with a yearning tone so heartbreaking that you can almost envision the young starlet “cry[ing] all night in [her] bungalow.”

Musically, the song is just as melancholy, with a lush combination of Western/surf guitar, keyboard, and harp flourishes, solid acoustic strumming, and a steady, slow, backbeat. One can easily envision this song playing behind an emotional turning point near the end of a film, a gorgeous sunset as the backdrop to the tearful melodrama playing out on the screen. If used for this kind of scene, the music would be as much a part of the audience’s emotion as the film’s plot and performances, and even alone, the song is something of a tearjearker. It’s at once sad and beautiful, and touches the listener’s heart. All in all, it’s a gorgeous triumph for Stan Ridgway, and a song any movie buff can appreciate.
