Taken as a part of the whole Carter Family oeuvre, "Diamonds in the Rough" is a bit of a lesser light and not quite as powerful or moving as "Can the Circle Be Unbroken" or "River of Jordan." By itself, however, the tune is a very evocative slice of old-time gospel music. The story is a simple and familiar one; a poor sinner lost in the ways of the world -- this time, fittingly enough, a musician on the way to a gig -- finds peace and comfort through a religious conversion and renounces the life of sin. Much like Hank Williams's "I Saw the Light," the Family sings of how giving oneself over to God is the truest way to find happiness -- although, quite frankly, the Carters practiced what they preached a bit better than ol' Hank ever did. Spiritual implications aside, "Diamonds in the Rough" is an excellent example of early, pre-amplified country music. The Family's vocal harmonies aren't picture perfect, but that rough, raw quality is what makes the song as powerful as it is. Close your eyes, and it's almost like any old-school Sunday sing-a-long in any church throughout the South, and brothers and sisters, that's about as good as it gets.
