The king of raunchy, Minneapolis funk takes a break from erotica to address the subject of digital downloading. Queen-like, operatic background vox, robotic, staccato rhythms, discordant guitar squall and synthesized sound effects create a futuristic, funkadelic milieu for his opaque musings on the music industry’s current hot topic. “I am the cybersingle, come and get my download / To be free or not to be free / That is the queston, see.” The lyrics don’t make his stance on the Napster issue absolutely clear, but given his well-publicized drama with Warner Brothers (he called his contract “enslavement”), along with references here to the “media titans’ grip” and pleas to “Take back your culture my brothers and sisters,” we’re betting Prince is in favor of any one willing to take on the majors. Then again, the Artist Formerly Known As Ampersand is a bizarre enigmatic cat. Who the heck knows what he’s really thinking?
