Remember the De La of old -- those colorful daisyheads who rhymed about three being the magic number, and Jennifer O Jenny over loopy, whimsical samples? Well, those days are long gone. This simple, quiet track, wrought from a quick drum roll, some jazzy piano notes and a couple upright bass plucks, reflects the more distilled style they opted for a couple of albums back. It’s also a good example of the mellow vibe that prevails on their latest album, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump. Lyrically, the cut is basically a series of stream-of-conscious braggadocio, done with De La’s usual wit, verve and consciousness. Here’s an unusual boast to make you do a double-take and hit “rewind”: “We too pure for you to try / You sniffing maybe’s and if’s / If ‘if’ was a spliff, man, we’d all be high / But it’s not, so sober up.” Here’s another: “We sport rhyme-thought real tight / To gain sizes much bigger.” Once again, De La’s tight rhyme-thought expands the noggin, but overall, the song fails to thump the bod or make us smile.

de la soul IS dead
oddjob

Bland rhymes from De La. Not really into the hook or vocals. Nothing innovative or moving.
