Gene Mayday Album: Rising For Sunset
Genres: Alternative,Rock
With the British quartet Gene, every song is a distress call, and this stellar live version of "Mayday" is no exception. |

With Morrissey and the Smiths out of the way, the world is safe for the likes of Gene, with their angular '80s guitars and moody arrangements and "woe is you" lyrical concerns. "Mayday," originally found on the Revelations studio album and pulled here from the L.A. concert sessions for the live Rising for Sunset (2000), is a chunky bit of Smithsiana, with Martin Rossiter's plaintive yet forceful vocals floating just above the mix of guitarist Steve Mason's Marr-like mood riffage and the passive/aggressive rhythm section of bassist Kevin Miles and drummer Matt James. The stage can point up a band's weaknesses in a heartbeat, but Gene presents a muscular live persona, interpreting "Mayday" not with bloodless technical precision but with an imperfect passion that gives the track life and personality. Without the benefit of the studio overdub, the band is playing essentially as a power trio with vocalist -- and while there are a couple of flat spots here and there, the adrenaline of live performance helps Gene kick "Mayday" into overdrive.

This track rocks! Passionate, enthralling, and juiced up! I was at the Troubador for the Gene show the night after this one and it was just as exciting!
