Me First & the Gimme Gimmes Country Roads Album: Denver 7
Genres: Punk
Driving through this John Denver tune might seem like a good idea, but this (allegedly) punk rock version makes a wrong turn. |

While the idea of a group of punk rock all-stars covering John Denver sounds like a good one, they should have given this a lot more teeth. Me First & the Gimme Gimmes could have snarled through a muscular “Country Roads” that would have scared Denver more than that second before his helicopter crashed, but instead, they came up with a limp-wristed, sped-up version with just a little added guitar crunch. Come on, guys, where’s the snot-nosed attitude that your individual bands are famous for? This should have been funny or kitschy, but it’s just kind of boring -- punk rock by the numbers, if you will. Don’t let this track fool you -- most of the Gimme Gimmes’ cover tunes are a lot of fun, but they shouldn’t have wasted their time with this one.

I think that the Country Music community should thank Me First and the Gimme Gimmie's personally for sprucing that song up a bit. What used to be a slow, mondane balad now is chipper and upbeat.
