Singer-songwriter Jim Lauderdale nails the mood and phrasing of Gram Parsons on this terrific track. Against the backdrop of a nicely picked acoustic guitar, Lauderdale channels the lonesome, spiritual, mystical feel of Parsons’ “Cosmic American Music.” Effective harmonies come in midway through and take the song to the next level. This is a beautifully understated love song that again demonstrates why Parsons was considered so influential. That influence can be heard in the ‘70s country rock sounds of the Eagles as well as in the sound of modern alt-country troubadours like Ryan Adams of Whiskeytown. Lauderdale isn’t always the best interpreter, even of his own songs. He’s often better letting folks like George Strait turn his songs into huge country hits. But on “Blessin’ For Bein’,” he evokes the spirit of Gram by keeping things simple and the sound is very becoming. It’s a breath of fresh air in an overproduced world.
