It must have seemed like such a good idea to pair dancehall chatter Buju Banton with his reggae-loving labelmates, Rancid, whose punk is colored by a Clashlike fascination with island music. But what works on paper doesn’t always on wax, and the fault is usually a subpar tune, as is the case here. It’s a guitar-driven groove not too dissimilar from the one featured on Rancid’s ’98 collaboration with Brooklyn Rastaman Dr. Israel, but the blend of mildly distorted riff and dancehall drum machine just sounds cheesy this time out, and the combination of Banton’s low rumble and Rancid singer Tim Armstrong’s rasp isn’t a match made in heaven, either. The main problem, though, is that the singsong melody quickly wears thin, leaving you little to do except look to the lyric -- which, though pleasantly positive, waters down the incisive style Banton displayed on hits like “Murderer.” A disappointment.
