"Havana Midnight" arrives from Cuba with love -- but folk rebel Bob Neuwirth's heart still beats red, white and blue on this rootsy piano ballad! |

Bob Neuwirth’s latest recordings may reflect a fascination with Latin American music, but there are only traces of that influence on "Havana Midnight," a ballad with a painterly sweep appropriate to his artistic background. It’s the sort of song you might have heard on the mid-‘70s albums of Neuwirth’s old crony, a songwriter named Bob Dylan. However, the vague ethnic flavor -- a subtle dash of accordian, as well as the Cuban allusion of the title -- and Neuwirth’s trademark gritty vocals, make this track more reminiscent of Willie Nelson's recent collaboration with atmosphere-king Daniel Lanois. In this case, the smokey ambience is provided by collaborator Jose Maria Vitier, whose jazz roots are a sharp counterpoint to the country/folk that has become Neuwirth's specialty. What might seem like a questionable pairing on paper works beautifully in practice -- the somber piano backing gives supple support to Neuwirth's disillusioned -- but ultimately hopeful -- narrative. If you're fond of singers with world-weary charm to burn, and songs of searching depth, then this stirring, stately single is right up your alley.
