Fans of that New Jack Swing style will definitely be pleased with Ricky Bell and Johnny Gill's new MUSICBLITZ Exclusive, "Acoustic Struggle." That's not to imply that "Stuggle" sounds dated, though. While the duo generate the same sexy attitude that was successful on both Gill's solo material and Bell's work with Bell Biv DeVoe, they contrast their funky grooves and soulful crooning against a simple and beautiful acoustic guitar for a striking and thoroughly modern effect. The vocals are at the forefront, as Bell and Gill's voices play against each other as well as they ever did in New Edition, backing each other and harmonizing with ease. Their pleading vocal style is effective at communicating the travails of the song's protagonist, of whom Bell and Gill sing, "She's beautiful but troubled / Straight from the ghetto hustle / She doesn't want you to know that / She's in a struggle." In all, a solid groove that will both excite long-time fans and appeal to listeners of modern day slow jams.
