Live recording are often very different in style and sound from studio tracks. And depending on the music, the artist, the performance, etc, the live edition of a song can be vastly superior or inferior to the studio counterpart. “Drop the Bomb” by the Gap Band is neither better nor worse for being a live recording, but due to the fact that the song is of the electro-funk variety and intended for dance, there’s something lost in the translation. Recorded live at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia, the clean bass, background harmony and lyrics typically accentuated in a studio edition, swims in the murky noise of the audience. The song can make the listener wish they were in attendance at the concert, but the song itself is difficult to listen to on its own. Still, if the audience reaction is any indication, these 25 year vets still now how to kick out the jams.
