John Pizzarelli’s come a long way from his early, uncertain beginnings, when he dabbled with modern pop and barely played a lick of guitar. Now he’s refined his style to a sleek amalgam of fingersnapping swing and romantic, Gershwin-eqsue balladry, with plenty of his six-string sweetening added to seal the deal. The title track from his latest album is a fairly impressive example of the slower, second part of the above equation, evoking the usual rainy-day metaphors but still managing to sound fresh. Part of that’s due to Pizzarelli’s ease as a performer -- there’s no longer a trace of the self-consciousness that marred his earlier outings. And part of the credit should go to his longtime partners, brother Martin on bass and pianist Ray Kennedy, who provide flawless backing that never calls attention to itself. You can also mark the distance between Pizzarelli’s past and present by noting that this is one of his originals. It’s a far cry from Pizzarelli’s first efforts; while it notably inhabits Harry Connick country, it’s still a very credible effort at recapturing the classic vibe that’s fueled both men’s careers and underpinned their best work.
