Skavoovie & The Epitones Hi-Ball Album: Ska: The Third Wave
Genres: Reggae
This totally un-perky instrumental ska track might sound great on a long elevator ride next to, say, a moog version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Other than that, you’re on your own … |

Y’know, I think it’s just great that the magnificent and original Jamaican invention of the early ‘60s known as ska has been experiencing a “third wave” of popularity here in the US (the second being the British ska invasion of the ‘80s led by Madness and the Specials). In the case of this Skavoovie and the Epitones track, though, the third wave has done nothing but severely water down one of the most vibrant and exciting music forms ever created. Limp instrumental solos and an uninspired rhythm section make Hi-Ball into a low point for ska’s legacy. Granted, this group is in tough company; with original ska masters like the Skatalites still around and kicking ass, it’s gotta be tough for these epigones from Boston. But bands like Jump With Joey and the Solsonics have proven that new ska isn’t necessarily bad ska -- Skavoovie may get lotsa props as a great live act, but they need to kick it up a few notches in the studio.
