Simply stated, "Dear Jerry" is one of this much underrated band's greatest tunes -- and a perfect example of what makes the band so amazing to begin with. Driven by a simple guitar figure and vocalist/guitarist Brian Karmelich's tentative vocals, "Dear Jerry" becomes not only a heartfelt elegy to the late Grateful Dead guitarist, but a wry commentary on the changing of that band's audience from wide-eyed innocents to cynical (but still idealistic) adults: "When I was a hippie, I used to wear tie-dyes / And when I was a yuppie, I wore your designer tie." As with many of Sauce's songs, you'll find yourself laughing with the lyrics at first -- but by the final barroom singalong chorus (driven home by vocalist Jim Hudson's trademark uber-tenor), you'll be ready to bust out a copy of American Beauty.
