Julie Lee Soap Box Album: Many Waters
Genres: Alt-Country
Lee evokes a country sound of long ago on this acoustic flavored, homespun tune recorded in a Nashville church. |

You’ll never guess when “Soap Box” was recorded listening to it the first time -- it seems to float in across the transom from some bygone age. With its gentle mandolin and acoustic guitar accompaniment, Lee’s voice recalls Iris DeMent or Mandy Barnett at their best, lacking the occasionally irritating chirps and hiccups favored by a number of female country singers. But in a time when alt.country divas like Neko Case and Shelby Lynne are coming into their own, it’s also not a terribly distinctive voice. Still, “Soap Box” is worth a download for its vintage feel, even if it doesn’t reinvent the wheel.

I like the old fashioned sounds of the guitars as well as the lo-fi recording.
