  Old 97's
Doreen (Live)
Album: Live at Stubbs 1996
Genres: Alt-Country
Muddy sound and a poor recording derail this freight-train rocker from the Old 97's.

Please, whatever you do, don't judge the Old 97's by this particular download. Honestly, this band kicks ass, both live and on record, and "Doreen," as featured on 1995’s Wreck Your Life, is a rockin' little slice of cowpunk detailing love, betrayal and, above all, jealousy. But this live version, recorded in 1996 at Austin's world-famous Stubb's Barbecue, is dead on arrival. "Doreen" is hampered by extremely sub-par sound; it's flat, muddy and, above all, a distraction from the tune itself -- everything a good live recording shouldn't be. You can't really fault the Old 97's, though; Rhett Miller and the boys pull out all the stops on this high-octane, bluegrass-infused rocker, playing with an intensity and fire the band's records only come close to matching. However, when all's said and done, the poor sound quality ruins what musical joy "Doreen" has to offer. Pass on this and go see 'em live.

I'm glad to see some Old 97s on the site!!! While this recording isn't the best quality, it really catches the essense of a live show...the Old 97s are an amazing band, "Fight songs" was one of my favorite albums last year. Their albums are definitely worth a listen...THEY ROCK
