Before long, the phat, hip-hop inflected backing track kicks in, turning the track on its head with a down-tempo, but mad cool bass line. Front man Mookie Thornton waxes wicked, alternating between a smoothly sung bee-bop-ish chorus and a rap style that’s reminiscent of prime time Cypress Hill. But there’s more surprises in store; just as you get comfortable with the song’s deep-pocket groove, “Sheeba” takes another hard left, segueing into a bumpin’ dancehall reggae style. And it works! The toast boasts about the charms of some fine femme fatale, with loads of hip-hop slang and shibboleths.
