Genres: Jazz,Pop
The Boss, the brass, and Ol’ Blue Eyes kicks ass! When Sinatra swings, there’s a “Night and Day” difference between him and the competition! |

This short live version of the Sinatra staple (and Cole Porter classic) finds the Chairman backed by a straight-up, swingingly brassy arrangement that he easily matches in vocal power. While that means one dimension of the song is lost -- there’s no delicate intro to set up the fireworks, as on one of Sinatra’s best-known studio takes on the song, nor does the brass cede a lot of wiggle room -- he simply reaches for a little extra and forces his way atop the horns and strings. For many performers that would mean simply outshouting the band, but this is Sinatra we’re talking about. Capable of a highly nuanced vocal even at top volume (his early studies of circular breathing paid off throughout his career), he delivers a smooth and winning performance here that’s not as easy as it sounds. While not his best by a longshot, it still shows skills most other singers just couldn’t hope to match.
