Marvin Gaye Trouble Man Album: Seven Soundtrack
Genres: R&B
What’s Going On? This jazzed-up blaxploitation tune from the original “Trouble Man,” that’s what! You won’t be shaft-ed on this slice of understated and underrated soul! |

At first listen, the title tune from this movie soundtrack could just as easily have made the cut for “What’s Going On,” with its loose-limbed, jazz-soul swing and plenty of Gaye’s otherworldly falsetto. But where the songs on that album all seemed to have a sense of hope, even when tackling the big issues of the day, there’s something more troubling lurking under the surface of “Trouble Man.” Maybe it’s just the slightly ominous bass groove, rooted in the blues that produced plenty of stories about “trouble men” like Stagger Lee. Or maybe it’s the way Gaye sings “I’m gonna keep movin’” in a way that suggests you can outrun your inner torment; it comes off too breezy to be believable, and Gaye’s life was the unfortunate proof. Both reasons probably contribute to the power of this piece of film music, which stands up against any of the day’s more popular blaxploitation hits.
