Hawaiian dub? Some spooky uke pluckin’ gives this roots riddim file a dash of South Pacific style! |

Having proven in the past that they’re no reggae pretenders, the various members of the Version City Rockers know full well that in dub, one small element can immediately and audibly alter an entire mix. So while “Dub Ho” is full of dub’s regulation depth-charge snares and rides the bone-rattling bassline you’d expect, this instrumental take on Agent J’s “Luau” riddim” gets its unexpected tropical twist from the Pacific, instead of the Atlantic -- thanks to some ukelele strums that fit in quite nicely amidst the Jamaican trappings. That livens up the rock-solid but unspectacular groove enough to make this one worth a repeat listen or two, and gives further evidence that the Rockers have done their roots homework.
