Known to drum 'n' bass heads as the Queen of Jungle, DJ Rap has long reigned as one of the sole women to bust open the male-dominated drum 'n' bass underground. Last year, she went after the mainstream as well, releasing the full-length Learning Curve. The album contained its share of straightahead drum 'n' bass tracks, but its singles -- on which Rap herself sang -- sounded more like Madonna than underground club fare. D 'n' B purists, then, will be happy with this dark new track, which sees Rap getting back to the business of pumpin' up the beats. Collaborating with Kenny Ken, Rap heads up a pummeling assault on your senses, hammering away with her speedy jungle rhythms and eerie wordless cries. But just as the track heads toward standard drum 'n' bass territory, Rap takes a risk and throws you for a loop: She inserts a breather of airy keyboards, before slamming you again with her beats. The risk pays off: Drum 'n' bass tracks border on all sounding the same, but with Rap at the helm, "Subtronics" stands out from the rest of the pack.
