Self Trunk Fulla Amps Album: Gizmodgery
Genres: Alternative
This song may be performed entirely on toy instruments, but Self clearly isn't just playing around -- this is an ambitious, full-on rocker! |

"Trunk Fulla Amps" is quite ironically titled, considering the song (like all of Self's Gizmodgery album) is performed entirely on toy instruments. That's not to say that this is a cheesy novelty song, though -- to the contrary, it's a fantastic, quirky rocker that recalls some of the best moments of bands like They Might Be Giants and Soul Coughing. The best part of the song is the brilliant way in which Self takes off on other artists. Each verse starts, "I've got a trunk fulla amps, mother fucker, like [insert artist's name here] mother fucker," with the second "mother" sung in the style of the artist he mentions -- Freddie Mercury, ELO, Glen Danzig, and Lenny Kravitz. It's both witty and endearing, and the heart of the song. Musically, you'd never know this was recorded on toy instruments, as Self easily overcome any limitations of the equipment, and the pop hooks stick in your head more than a nursery rhyme. All in all, it's a great song that will leave you wanting more Self for yourself!

Lacking a genuine chorus, but it's a comedic song that'll make ya bounce! Bling bling!

Not a bad song, but sounds a like they are trying to be a mix between the Beastie Boys and Beck.
