  Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
Rock The Casbah (Live)

The Clash's snaggle-toothed frontman trudges half-heartedly through his old band's biggest hit. Cas-blah is more like it!

In the interest of full disclosure, I'll admit that I've always hated "Rock The Casbah." After spending the bulk of my high school years championing such Clash masterpieces as London Calling and their first album, it was incredibly depressing to see my classmates (and the rest of the world) finally climbing aboard the Clash bandwagon on the basis of this flimsy disco novelty number. That said, I was hoping that Joe Strummer would now at least feel motivated to give the old hit a kick up the arse, but no such kick is forthcoming from this live version recorded in late 1999 at L.A.'s House of Blues. Maybe he's simply sung this song too many times; in any case, Strummer's delivery is thoroughly listless, and the song seems ready to stumble to a halt at any moment. Hey, Joe -- if you can't get it up anymore for your old band's biggest hit, then it's time to drop it from the setlist.
