N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton Album: Straight Outta Compton
Genres: Rap/Hip Hop
With 20 uses of the “F” word, lots of gun references and attitude for days, it’s no wonder this 1989 is the blueprint for modern-day gangsta rap. |

To hip-hop ears, this track is like Beethoven’s Ninth, or any other seminal classic by Mozart or Bach, from the goosebump-inducing prelude (“You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge”), through 20 uses of the “F” word, through Eazy’s high-pitched final verse. Like the AK-47’s referenced in its lyrics, the title track to what is considered the blueprint of West Coast gangsta rap splatters the senses with its urgent, slamming, gunfire-laden soundscape. At the time of its release, Dre’s aural chaos blasted L.A.’s then-popular techno-rap sound to smithereens, ushering in a new chapter in West Coast hip-hop. As you listen to this song today, it’s not hard to imagine a teenaged, snarling, Jeri-curled Cube playing studio gangsta as he fires off lines like, “I got a sawed off / Squeeze the trigger and bodies are hauled off…./ When I’m in your neighborhood, ya’ better duck / Cuz Ice Cube is crazy as fuck.” Guaranteed to pump you up, this is hardcore at its angst-ridden, testosterone-fueled best.
