On this nod to the big man upstairs, Wyclef’s trademark fusion of musical idioms is in full effect, but the disparate sonic swaths sewn together here don’t quite match. Reggae star Jimmy Cliff offers up his smooth, elevating vocals over a pop-reggae beat, only to be interrupted repeatedly -- irritatingly -- by an abrupt shift to a frenetic, ska-flavored beat and Clef’s rapid-fire raps. At times, it feels like two tracks smashed together -- like a bone marrow transplant that didn’t quite take, or like slamming a cup of Island Roast and Red Stripe at the same time. But the message, about faith in the face of adversity, is sound. When Clef asks his maker, "Protect me from the evil dwellers and the parasites / Sometimes I feel like a shouldn’t have been born / That’s when a voice tells me I was born to face the storm / And after the storm it gets calm / So there’s no need to panic / It’s a false alarm," you can’t help but be a little inspired.
