Part jazz, part funk, part soul …aaaaaaaaall good. Soulive emerges from the East Coast with a timeless groove in “Uncle Junior,” but there’s nothing junior about their sound. Guitarist Eric Krasno starts it off with a guitar that sounds vaguely reminiscent of the sound effects in Pac Man, but soon brings so much depth to his playing you can just imagine him perched atop a stool, smiling as he digs into the groove, the study of a man immersed in the music and lovin’ it. Soul brothers Alan and Neal Evans more than hold their own. For the first half, the show really belongs to Neal as he plows through with a keyboard line that dares you to stay in your seat. In addition to his scorching keyboard sounds, Neal also nails bass duties on his Hammond, fooling the casual listener into believing they’re hearing a quartet. Brother Alan anchors the whole thing with some solid rhythms that guarantee you won’t miss a step -- how can you deny that high-hat?! Just when you feel like you couldn’t possibly stand to groove any harder, they switch gears, smoothing out the sound and turning it over to Krasno’s silky six-string -- the man can play. No showboating on this cut -- everyone’s given equal time and you can feel the cohesiveness of a trio of musicians who respect the hell out of each other. This trio is the real deal, proving you don’t have to be old to sound timeless.

Jimmy Smith should be proud - the funk pores out on this one.
