You might expect Rita Marley to offer up a weighty roots message instead of this pop-friendly reggae confection, which owes almost as much to the Jackson 5 (for whom she once opened as an I-Three) as Jamaica. But the family name doesn’t stop her from having fun, so here’s to defying expectations: “Good Girls Culture” is lightweight but irresistible, taking its cues from a propulsive, R&B style bassline and Marley’s jubilant vocal. Nothing wrong with pumping a little melody into the dancehall, after all, and the tune serves a bit of notice to the bad girls often found there, although the real message is in the music itself. Filled with crossover potential, this one would sit well on anybody’s summer mix for the car; it’s a little late for this year, but you can always plan ahead.
