Genres: Metal,Rock
Whitesnake by any other name, David Coverdale returns with this limp little power ballad that makes us pine away for the Slide It In days. |

Though advance press for his 2000 release, In The Light, promised a new direction for the former Whitesnake ringleader, the first single, “Slave,” is actually business as usual for David Coverdale. Following the pattern of the classic “Slow ‘n Easy,” “Slave” begins with a swampy, ultra blooozy intro that explodes into a screaming chorus, in this case, “I wanna be your / I wanna be your / I wanna be your SLAAAAVE!!!.” Ridiculous? Sure, but no more so than any other Whitesnake lyric -- or for that matter, any blues lyric going back to Robert Johnson. If there’s a problem with this song, it’s that -- like most of Coverdale’s music -- it’s simply nothing special. “Slave” is a generic power ballad that wouldn’t have been out of place in ’87, and won’t offend hard rock fans in 2000. A pity that his ‘90s sabbatical -- a time when Coverdale could have rejuvenated and expanded his sound -- never delivered this excellent journeyman vocalist from the middle of the road.

For most of the '90s, Jay Sosnicki was the editor and publisher of the seminal underground zine Nuthing Sacred. These days -- in between explosive bursts of web production -- he continues to reinvent rock ‘n roll with his band, Mojo Rib.
