Sleater-Kinney Burn, Don't Freeze Album: The Hot Rock
Genres: Alternative,Punk
Perhaps Olympia's most tuneful popworld contribution, S-K tones down the anger just a bit - with trademark two-pronged vocal attack intact. |

Offering a somewhat gentler, scratchier dose of their trademark guitar interplay, "Burn Don't Freeze" puts the spotlight instead on the sweet-and-sour vocals of Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein. The gambit brings mixed results; the restraint is novel, yet doesn't quite suit S-K. But the driving choruses return the intensity, and it's Tucker's passionate wails that really get the song home.

"the hot rock" is a great album, because Sleater-Kinney finally sounds well rounded. The sound quality is fantastic, and you won't even miss the fact that there isn't a bass player in the group. "Burn, Don't Freeze" isn't the best song on the album by far, but if this is something you are at all into, you should try listening some more, because its all uphill from this.

The lead singer's voice sounds a bit shaky, but it packs a punch, and there're cool vocals in the background.
