Composed of a bassist, drummer, percussionist and two vocalists (as well as a DJ who acts as producer), San Francisco's Afro-Mystik have a large pool of instruments to draw from when creating their smooth sound. Apparently they have a wide variety of influences to pull from as well: This track, off their 1999 debut, Future Tropic, layers jazzy bass and piano over a hot samba rhythm (complete with the occasional whistle blow). It's a diverse combination, yet the group pulls it off; Afro-Mystik never add a new style without reason, instead taking care that each sound blends into the song as a whole. In the end, their caution is rewarded: "Devious Rhythms" is one seductive ride.

Afro-Mystik is one of the latest acts to bust out on OM Records. Combining third world percussion with African rhythms and electronic beats they make beautiful music that you can't fit neatly into any category.
