Count Basie How High The Moon (feat. Anita O'Day) Album: Legends: Jazz Greats Up Front And Center
Genres: Jazz
Classic Count from his swinging ‘40s radio days: the sound’s not sharp, but Basie and Co. are still the bomb! |

The sound quality’s pretty tinny on this 1948 radio broadcast from Birdland in the Big Apple, but it’s still easy to hear how crisp and tight Basie’s orchestra was at the time. Driven by his trademark powerful rhythm section (despite the lo-fi recording, there’s no mistaking that, either) and with a guest assist from the warm-voiced singer Anita O’Day, this version of “How High the Moon” simply cooks, despite the limitations. Considering how many classic jazz performances have been lost to the ether, it’s better to have than not -- so download, and whet your appetite for more classic Count. Luckily, there’s tons more to pick from.

The jazz artist Count Basie hits the classic count for the 40s and for the year 2001. The sing "How high the Moon" brings out the real orchestra and textures that blend real jazz.
