Genres: Jazz
Duke suits Zoot fine on this workmanlike live swinger from the City of Brotherly Love. |

Sims’ honking tenor leads his quartet through this easy-swinging tribute to Duke Ellington, unearthed from a live gig in Philly from the early 1980s. It’s a pleasant enough effort, suffering mostly from a lack of inspiration. Zoot’s playing is fine, bluesy and brisk and even a bit flashy in spots, but his three sidemen don’t really up the ante -- although pianist Benny Aronov does catch fire midway through a (too long) solo. As an introduction to Ellington for novice jazz fans, it’s at least straightforward and easy to grasp, but you’d of course do better checking out the source. Best-suited for Zoot fans.
