It’s hard to believe that it took so long for Lexxus to return to chart favor after this 1992 debut smash, because the evidence of stardom is all over it. Armed with a confident lyrical flow and a playful wit, it’s easy to imagine the 16-year-old DJ as the cutup he says he was as a kid. It’s also worth noting that even as a teenager, Lexxus was trying to craft lyrics that stood out from the too-frequent misogyny of the dancehall. While “Own A Home” has the musical feel of the Shabba/Buju/etc.-inspired DJ discs of the day, Mr. Lex struck an early (and rare) blow for the ladies on this cut, which is a toast to women who don’t have to be boopsies -- kept women, in other words -- and have their own cribs. “Own a home / Don’t have no problem … can even invite your boyfriend / To spend the whole weekend,” Lexxus chats, while making it clear he wouldn’t mind getting an invite or two as well. Seems safe to say that when this one dropped, he probably did.
