2Pac’s spirit lives on … and on, and on, and on. Here, the over-mythologized rapper and his Bay Area buddy, Spice 1, assume the role of hardened gangstas, and explain in first person that thuggery is a lifelong committment. Pac relates how he slings dope, sleeps with his eyes open and watches his homies get blown away -- while Spice tells us that hustlin’ is all he knows. An insistent, three-note piano riff ambles across the melancholy track like a bad-ass mofo swaggering down the block, as the rappers lament the quicksand of the criminal lifestyle. Once you’re in, you’re stuck. Through all the expletives, misogynistic comments and tough-talking, you get a sense of remorse, but not much insight into their mindset. As 2Pac reiterates over and over that he “can’t turn back,” we’re left wondering, why can’t he?
