Merle Haggard Wishing All These Old Things Were New Album: If I Could Only Fly
Genres: Alt-Country
Merle’s a pearl on this confessional ballad, the kind that’ll put those contemporary country pukes to shame. The Hag is back! |

Don’t call it a comeback … well, actually it is, as the founding father of outlaw country music explores his addicted past and the jail tenure of his youth with splendid results. Yeah, his kids don’t like his cigarettes, but they’re the only vice he has left as he sings about “Good times like the roaring ‘20s and the roaring ‘80s too.” And for the singer/songwriter who has always created music on his own terms, “If I could start all over, I guess I’d still do what I do,” is more than a declaration, it’s a life motto. “Wishing…” is a simple, direct confessional that reaffirms Haggard’s legendary status.
