Everlast Black Jesus Album: Eat At Whitey's
Genres: Alternative
Everlast rises again with a song that's as heavenly as the title implies -- but with just enough hellraising to keep it interesting. |

The first single from Everlast's new album finds the former House Of Pain rapper continuing to "Jump Around," but this time, he's jumping genres. Mixing a gritty, bluesy vocal performance, a catchy "na na na" chorus, stark acoustic guitar, and hip hop beats, "Black Jesus" has a distinctive sound that won't be easily confused with anyone else's. You have to wonder how a relatively scrawny Irish guy comes off sounding like the bastard child of Tom Waits and B.B. King, but somehow, Everlast manages to summon up all the power and gravel you'd expect from the comparison. The beats and acoustic blues match up well, and the song reaches its climax with a brief reference to the Trashmen's legendary garage rocker, "Surfin' Bird." In short, "Black Jesus" is damn near heavenly, but still has enough of the devil's touch to it to give it an edge.
