Utilizing 4 turntables and NO microphone, New York’s The X-Men take a hands-on approach to creating beats on this minimalist hip-hop soundscape. The problem with “A Turntable Experience” is that things become so minimal that they’re barely musical. The X-Men show great skill in their ability to create funky live rhythms using just their turntables; however, this track ends up sounding more like an exercise in technique than a fully realized track. In a live setting, this sort of display would likely be dazzling, but after repeated listening, the novelty of “Experience” wears off pretty quickly. The X-Men have the skills, but they’ll need to flesh out their sound to take things to the next level.
