David Wilcox Start With the Ending (Live) Album: n/a
Genres: Pop
Adult Contemporary stalwart Wilcox gets about as close to an edge as he's ever gonna get on this live version of "Start With The Ending." |

Adult Contemporary singer/guitarist David Wilcox has been delivering the nicey-nice for nearly 15 years now. Nice voice, nice guitar playing, extra nice lyrics . . . Some people have compared him to James Taylor, but at least Taylor's nice voice had personality, and his songs had some irony. On "Start With The Ending," Wilcox gets just about as close to an edge as he's gonna get, as what he calls a "hip-hop" rhythm track (though truly more reggae) buoys his sparse, cheery acoustic guitar and front-end, storytelling vocals. I like the stippling of Hammond B3 in the background however, and the lyrics are amusing: "The secret of a happy marriage / Maybe you should write this down / You wanna keep a love together? / The best way is to end it now." Wilcox proclaims that love would work better if relationships started with the deterioration and heartbreak first. Nice idea.
