ulu
The East Coast is a hotbed of new groove & funk outfits, and ulu can claim to be a leading force among the legions of boogie bands currently coming out of New York. ulu first took it to the streets in April, 1997, debuting in Butler, New Jersey. The band, comprised of drummer David Hoffman, bassist Justin Wallace, keyboardist Scott Chasolen, guitarist Luca Benedetti and saxman Aaron Gardner, soon found themselves sharing the stage with such acts as De La Soul, The Greyboy Allstars, and Victor Wooten. The ulu sound is a hybrid of jam and jazz, a sound the Village Voice calls “gumby-textured squonk.” Releases include their self-titled 1998 debut, and 1999’s Live at The Wetlands. |
