Lazy Lester
One of the definitive practitioners of Louisiana swamp blues, Lazy Lester was born Leslie Johnson in Torras, Louisiana in 1933. Profoundly influenced by country singer Jimmie Rodgers, as well as bluesmen Jimmy Reed and Little Walter Jacobs, young Leslie cut his chops playing with local heroes Guitar Gable and Big Walter Jacobs, eventually becoming quite proficient on guitar, harmonica, and even percussion. As Lazy Lester, he recorded numerous sides for the Modern and Excello labels, including the ever-popular "I Hear You Knockin'," before drifting into semi-retirement in the mid-sixties. Lester returned to the stage in 1987, and has been touring steadily ever since. |
