Welcome !
    Veruca Salt
Chicago power pop band Veruca Salt (named after a character in the children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) began life in Louise Post’s living room. There, in the early ‘90s, she and fellow singer-guitarist Nina Gordon practiced each other’s songs, eventually deciding to form a band. Steve Lack joined up on bass, and Gordon’s older brother, Jim Shapiro (who fronted a group called Ultraswiss) learned to play drums so he could back up his sister. In 1994, the small Chicago label Minty Fresh released Veruca Salt’s debut album, American Thighs, produced by indie vet Brad Wood (Liz Phair). The record’s enthusiastic reception and a growing fan base persuaded DGC Records to sign the quartet and re-release its debut. Propelled by ringing guitars and unabashed hooks, the single “Seether” became a radio and MTV hit. Eventually, Shapiro returned to his original band, and Letters to Cleo drummer Stacy Jones stepped in. In 1997, Veruca Salt resurfaced with its second effort, the Bob Rock-produced Eight Arms to Hold You, which pumped up the hard-rock side of its sound. Though the singles “Volcano Girls” and “Shutterbug” lacked the impact of “Seether,” the record almost reached gold status. Still, Gordon left in 1998 to pursue a solo career. Enlisting three new musicians to back her as Veruca Salt, Post signed to the Beyond label in 1999, releasing the third VS record Resolver a year later.
