DJ Abstract
In recent years, DJ Abstract has risen through the ranks to become one of San Francisco's premier drum 'n bass DJs. This dark tangle of beats shows why: Abstract tames his fast-paced drums into a smooth stream of sound, all while maintaining the music's menacing energy. Originally a drummer dabbling in jazz, hip-hop and metal, Abstract (born Alex Posell) later got turned on to the drum 'n bass scene. The L.A. transplant soon emerged as one of San Francisco's reigning DJs, working with other like-minded artists as part of the B.A.S.S. Kru. In 1995, he signed on to San Francisco's Phunckateck crew, a tightly knit group of DJs and producers founded by DJs Noel and UFO. The crew put San Francisco on the drum 'n bass map in the late '90s, operating a weekly night of the same name at the Bay Area club Cat's Grill. Abstract did his part to advance the genre through 12-inches like "Invisible Lines," the first single in the Phunckateck series on L.A.'s Green Label; he also started his own drum 'n bass imprint, Pneuma.
Abstract's work has often been lauded for its explosive quality, and "Eklekticon" is no exception. Waves of rock-hard beats crash against each other, whipped about like the sea during a storm. The track also features Phunkatech's UFO and DJ Teebee from Norway, whose devestating releases have been shredding dancefloors for several years now. If you're looking for a penultimate piece of West coast drum 'n bass, you can't get much better than this.
