Ohio Players
Known for their percussive funk sound and sexed up album art, these disco-era heroes hit their stride in the mid-70s with a string of chart-topping R&B and pop singles. Hailing from Ohio, the Players first banded together under the name Greg Webster and the Ohio Untouchables. They did a stint backing up Wilson Pickett and the Falcons before changing their moniker and dropping their first album, Observations In Time, in 1967. In the early ‘70s, they scored with hits like “Funky Worm,” “Jive Turkey” and “Skin Tight.” 1974’s “Fire” (from the album of the same) was their biggest hit to date, followed by the classic “Love Rollercoaster” -- probably their two most recognizable songs. Cashing in on the retro craze, the band still tours, transforming clubs across the country into funked-up, hand-waving celebrations. |
