Aquarium Rescue Unit
In 1990, a series of jam sessions in Georgia produced the collective known as Aquarium Rescue Unit which, since it's inception, has boasted an all-star line-up of musicians schooled in areas as diverse as funk, Latin, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and Southern rock. Ringleader Colonel Bruce Hampton left the group in the spring of '94 and has since moved on to the Fiji Mariners, but members Oteil Burbridge (5-and 6-string bass), brother Kofi (keyboards, flute, piano), Jimmy Herring (guitar), Apt. Q258 aka Jeff Sipe (drums) and Paul Henson (vocals) have kept the group alive in addition to sharing their talents with countless other groups (Oteil also plays for the Allman Brothers Band, Herring for Jazz Is Dead and Frogwings). Colonel Bruce was still at the helm on 1992's Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit and 1993's Mirrors Of Embarrassment, but the lineup shifted when he left and was initally replaced by Oteil doing double-duty on bass and vocals. Eventually the vocals were handled by longtime fan Paul Henson on 1996's In A Perfect World. |
