The Manhattans
Formed in New Jersey in 1961, these doo-wop inspired, romantic soul balladeers recorded several unsuccessful singles before hitting in ’65 with “I Wanna Be (Your Everything).” They followed up the next year with their debut album, Dedicated. Throughout the ‘60s, they popped up on the charts with songs like “Searchin’ For My Baby” and “Can I.” When lead vocalist Smitty Smith died in ’71 of spinal meningitis, Gerald Alston stepped in to take his place. The group continued to turn out hits in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, and still records and tours today. |
